Centralia's singles dominate in sweep of Black Hills

The Centralia girls tennis team swept Black Hills on Tuesday, taking all six matches in straight sets.

Across the three singles matches, the Tigers dropped just six sets combined. Maya Lackie won the top singles match 6-1, 6-0, Esther Hopkins won 6-2, 6-1, and Eliyah Rooklidge came away with a 6-2, 6-0 win.

The top two doubles matches were much closer, as Sophia Wiley and Aydan Butler won the top doubles matchup 7-5, 6-4, and Brook Frakes and Neela Haywood needed a tiebreaker to earn the first set in a 7-6 (11-9), 6-2 win.

Suki Bringman and Saryn Pelesky rounded out the sweep by winning 6-0, 6-0.

Both the Tigers and Wolves will wrap up their regular season on Wednesday. The Tigers will welcome W.F. West, while the Wolves will head across town to face Tumwater.

T-Birds top Wolves to cap perfect league season

The Tumwater baseball team finished off an undefeated league season on Tuesday, as the T-Birds topped Black Hills 11-4.

As the designated road team, the T-Birds (16-4, 12-0 2A EvCo) went to the plate first on their home field, and they scored a pair to take an early lead.

Black Hills (4-15, 1-11) responded with a run of its own in the bottom half, and the Wolves took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the second.

Tumwater took over from there, however, tying the game in the third before taking the lead and never looking back in the fourth.

Eddie Marson went 2 for 4 at the plate and drove in three, while Derek Thompson and Jimmy Womach also collected two hits and drove in a run. Thompson also allowed just one hit and one earned run in four innings on the mound.

Charlie Crawford brought home two on an RBI double in his only official at-bat, and Braeden Konrad pitched two perfect innings in relief.

William Kytta recorded the Wolves’ lone RBI.

Tumwater will host North Thurston in a non-league matchup in its regular season finale on Friday. After that, the T-Birds will host a district quarterfinal on Tuesday, May 7.

Black Hills finishes its season 4-15 and is set to graduate nine seniors.

T-Birds fall to Bobcats in non-league action

The Tumwater softball team led early in its non-league contest at Aberdeen on Tuesday, but the Thunderbirds couldn’t hold on and lost 6-3.

Tumwater (13-4, 8-1 2A EvCo) took 1-0 lead in the second and made it 2-0 in the fourth, but the Bobcats tied the game with a pair in the bottom of the fourth.

Tumwater regained the lead in the top of the fifth on a fielder’s choice, but the Bobcats scored three in the bottom half and added an insurance run in the sixth.

Sarah Stevens pitched all six innings in the circle, and of the six runs she allowed, three were unearned. She gave up five hits, walked one, and struck out six.

Stevens and Megan Paull each tallied two hits at the plate, and Lexie Peller collected the T-Birds’ lone RBI.

Tumwater will play its third game in as many days on Wednesday at Rochester.

Acorns fall to Elks for third-straight loss

The Oakville baseball team continued to struggle on Tuesday, as the Acorns lost to Lake Quinault 13-0 for its third consecutive loss.

The Acorns (7-6, 2-3 CVL) fell behind 3-0 after one and trailed 5-0 going into the fourth.

That’s where the Elks pulled away, scoring eight runs on six hits to go up double digits.

Oakville couldn’t get the bats going at any point, as they were no-hit and only reached base twice.

With the loss, the Acorns will likely be the No. 4 seed in the 1B District 4 tournament, and they’ll play the winner of Wednesday’s Naselle-Mossyrock matchup in a district semifinal on Monday.

Before that, though, Oakville will wrap up its regular season by hosting Pope John Paul II on Thursday and Wishkah Valley on Friday.
