Chehalis fourth-grader is one of five national finalists in 2024 Sodexo Future Chefs National Challenge

Orin Smith Elementary School fourth-grader Kason Talanoa has been selected as one of five national finalists for the 2024 Sodexo Future Chefs National Challenge.

Kason and his elote recipe qualified by placing first in the local Chehalis School District Future Chefs competition in March. He was selected as one of 40 regional finalists before being chosen from that pool of competitors.

“A panel of esteemed judges reviewed and voted on the recipes based on originality, healthy attributes, ease of preparation, kid friendliness and adaptability for school lunch. After reviewing hundreds of recipes, five students were selected as the National Future Chefs Finalists,” Sodexo stated in a news release.

When asked if there was anything he wanted to say after his elotes won first place in the 2024 Sodexo Future Chefs National Challenge at Orin Smith Elementary School in Chehalis on March 7, Kason said, “Never give up.”

The public is invited to help choose the national winner by voting online between Monday, May 6 and Friday, May 17.

“Each finalist has submitted a video of them preparing their dish and the public is being asked to cast their vote for their favorite,” Sodexo said.

Kason was set to film his video on April 25, and the video will be up online during the voting period.

This year, 34 Chehalis elementary school students submitted healthy recipes inspired by their favorite lunch meals, and eight were selected to participate in the district-wide finals event. Finalists had two hours to prepare and present their creations before being assessed on criteria including originality, taste, kid friendliness and use of healthy ingredients.

PWV takes league contest versus Ocosta, splits twinbill

Facing off against Loyola Marymount commit Jessie Gilbert, the Titans snared a P2BL victory over the Wildcats 3-1 at home on Monday afternoon. The non-league game between the two ended as a 7-3 win by Ocosta.

Gilbert ended the day with 14 strikeouts in a full six innings in the circle, but PWV (11-4, 4-1 P2BL) struck for all three of its runs came in the third inning with two outs. Three straight singles loaded the bases to set up a three-run triple off the bat of Karli Phelps.

Lauren Emery allowed one earned run in the fifth and struck out five on 85 pitches. Jillian Hodel registered two hits for PWV, who battle Ilwaco on Wednesday.

In the second game, Lauren Matlock ripped four hits – three of them triples – for the Titans. They scored once in the fourth and two times in the fifth, but couldn’t dig out of a 4-0 hole.

Two arrested, another suspect sought after police chase in Chehalis and Centralia on Monday

Centralia detectives are investigating an attempt-to-elude case after a man fled from both Centralia and Chehalis police, kept driving after spike strips deflated one of the car’s tires, and escaped on foot after the vehicle was partially disabled on Monday.

Two women who were inside the vehicle when officers found it driving on the shoulder of northbound Interstate 5 near milepost 85 were arrested on unrelated charges. A third woman inside the vehicle was released.

An officer with the Chehalis Police Department tried to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle in the 1600 block of Northwest Louisiana Avenue just after 5:35 p.m. on Monday, April 22, according to Centralia police call logs. The vehicle fled at a high rate of speed toward Centralia via Airport Road. Centralia officers in the area were able to deploy spike strips, which disabled one of the vehicle’s tires, but the vehicle “sped off at an excessive speed while passing other vehicles and running a stop light,” according to call logs.

Officers did not pursue in order to comply with current Washington state pursuit laws, the Centralia Police Department noted.

A Centralia officer did continue northbound on Interstate 5, where the suspect was last seen traveling, and located the partially disabled vehicle.

When the officer found the vehicle, it was being driven along the shoulder by a 49-year-old Ethel woman “who later claimed ownership of the vehicle.” She complied with the officer’s order to stop.

The woman, “along with her two adult daughters who were seated in the backseat, claimed they did not know the male who had been driving the vehicle,” according to Centralia call logs. Centralia police used a drone to try and locate the suspect, but were unsuccessful.

The Ethel woman was arrested and booked into the Lewis County Jail on an unrelated Chehalis Municipal Court warrant. One of her daughters in the vehicle, 20, of Mossyrock, was arrested by the Chehalis Police Department for criminal trespassing.

“Centralia police obtained a search warrant on the vehicle and located identifying documents belonging to a male who is believed to be the driver. Suspected fentanyl, methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia were also located inside the vehicle,” the Centralia Police Department stated.
