Top three hitters spur Vikings to league title

Fueled by the pop and speed at the top of the Mossyrock softball team’s lineup, it pounced all over Naselle to claim the league title with a 14-1 triumph in five innings on Thursday afternoon in Naselle.

It also sets up the Vikings (8-5) to be the top seed in the Class 1B District 4 tournament and be two wins away from a return trip to Yakima. They blew the game up behind five runs in the top of the third and four runs apiece in the last two innings.

Hadleigh Gerard, Adyson Barrows and Chesney Schultz combined to go 6-for-9 at the plate with nine runs scored, two doubles, two stolen bases and eight RBIs. Delaney Marshall chipped in two hits and Erin Cournyer earned the win in the circle, striking out three in five innings of work.

Mossyrock will return to facing 2B teams when it hosts Winlock on Friday for a doubleheader.

Acorns drop penultimate regular season game

The Oakville baseball team dropped its second-to-last game of the regular season on Thursday, as the Acorns fell to Pope John Paul II 13-7.

The Acorns (7-7) trailed 5-0 after a half inning of play, but cut the lead to two with three in the bottom of the first.

After the Eagles added on in the fourth, Oakville again chipped away with three more to get within one, but a six run sixth from Pope John Paul II put the game out of reach.

Joseph Charles collected three hits at the plate, including a double, and drove in a run, while Isaiah Bird added a pair of hits and scored a run.

Koner Burnett and Andres Rhoades also drove in runs for Oakville.

The Acorns will finish their regular season at home against Wishkah Valley on Friday, and after that, they’ll head to Naselle on Monday for a District 4 semifinal.

Mountaineers stave off Chinooks for second straight win

Ninety percent of the offense for the Rainier softball team came in the final inning and it had just enough to hold off Kalama and triumph for a 7-6 C2BL victory on Thursday afternoon in Kalama.

Two straight league wins puts the Mountaineers (8-8, 4-3 C2BL) in a tie with Napavine and Toutle Lake for fourth in the league. They have the head-to-head win over the Tigers and close the regular season versus the Ducks.

Five runs in the seventh broke a 2-2 tie and put Rainier on top. Olivia Earsley kicked off the frame with a go-ahead RBI double and Gracie Lantz ended the outburst with a two-run single. Ryleigh Cruse and Brooklynn Swenson both recorded run-scoring hits in the inning.

Kalama responded with four runs in the bottom half and could have tied the game if not for the Mountaineers throwing two runners out at the plate to keep them ahead. Cruse preserved the win with a groundout.

Swenson and Cruse each went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and at least one extra base hit at the plate while the latter struck out 10 in the circle and danced around six walks. Rainier will take on Winlock in a doubleheader on Monday.
