Swenson ignites Rainier past Napavine in thriller

Thirty-seven combined hits, 19 total walks and a whole lot of runs batted led to a high-scoring affair that Rainier triumphed in over Napavine, 21-11 on Monday night in a C2BL contest.

Brooklynn Swenson launched two home runs and drove in nine, the final four on a grand slam in an eight-run top of the seventh. That outburst of offense proved to be the final dagger as three RBI singles plus a run-scoring walk started the frame.

It was a back-and-forth affair all night. Napavine led 3-1 after one inning, then the Mountaineers (7-8, 3-3 C2BL) scored five in the second, capped by a two-run single from Swenson. They drew 10 walks against Tigers starter Hannah Fay in three innings.

“We worked as a team and made adjustments,” Rainier head coach Katie Qualls said. “You have to keep pace and try to jump ahead.”

Napavine (11-3, 4-2) scored three in the bottom of the fifth to trim the margin on a pair of RBI singles. Hayden Kaut registered four hits while Grace Pancake drove in three runs on three hits. Clara Fay had three hits, two of them for extra bases, and two RBIs.

Rainier’s Olivia Earsley went 4-for-6 at the plate with four runs scored while Raychel Hansen and Layla Hill each had two hits, two RBIs, two runs scored and two walks. Josie Vance drove in three runs for the Mountaineers.

Napavine travels to face Adna on Thursday while Rainier battles Kalama also on Thursday.

Man, 80, dies in head-on crash with logging truck on U.S. Highway 12 in Grays Harbor County

An 80-year-old Elma man died Monday after his vehicle crossed the centerline on U.S. Highway 12 in Grays Harbor County and collided with a logging truck, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Allan B. Kalar was traveling west near milepost 29 at about 1 p.m. Monday when his 2002 Ford Taurus crossed the centerline and struck a 1990 logging truck driven by Shannon J. Toso, 51, of Morton. Kalar’s vehicle came to a rest in the eastbound ditch while the logging truck came to rest on the westbound shoulder.

Kalar was declared dead after being transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Toso was injured in the crash but refused aid, according to the state patrol.

The state patrol listed the cause of the crash as failure to maintain lane. Both drivers were wearing seat belts.

According to the state patrol, it’s unknown whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.

Steady offense ignites Toledo past Kalama

Fifteen total hits plus a pair of multi-run outbursts kept the bats moving and allowed the Riverhawks to coast by the Chinooks with an 11-1, five-inning victory on Monday night in C2BL action.

The contest was at Toledo, but Kalama was the home team for the league game. The Riverhawks dominated the non-league portion of the doubleheader with a 15-1 victory.

Toledo (12-2, 5-2 C2BL) turned a 2-0 lead into 6-0 with four runs in the top of the third inning. Half of the tallies came on two of Kalama’s seven errors in the game. Two more miscuses occurred in the fifth of another four-run frame.

Zaya Norberg drove in three runs while Camryn Hurley went 4-for-4 at the plate and scored three times. Kailea Lairson and Mialeigh Jurica each notched two hits while Peyton Holter worked around six walks to earn the win in the circle.

Lairson had a home run and four RBIs in the non-league matchup while Brenna Carver struck out four in the circle to pick up the win. The Riverhawks will face fellow 2B foe in Pe Ell/Willapa Valley on Wednesday.

T-Birds outlast Bobcats behind three home runs

Tumwater’s Zoe Fields put the finishing touches on a vital 7-1 Evergreen Conference victory over Aberdeen on Monday night to stay atop the standings approaching the end of the regular season.

Fields launched the last of three long balls, leaving the park with a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth to give enough cushion for Ella Ferguson to shut the door in the seventh. Tumwater (13-3, 8-1 EvCo) broke a scoreless tie in the fourth on a leadoff homer by Jaime Haase.

After Aberdeen tied the contest at 1-1, Sarah Stevens put the Thunderbirds ahead for good with another leadoff home run and an insurance run crossed home on an RBI walk. Haase finished with two RBIs while Erika Schock roped two hits.

Ferguson struck out just two in the circle and worked around three walks to snare the win. Tumwater and Aberdeen will meet again on Tuesday in a non-league game.

Bearcats reach double figures once again in win over Wolves

The W.F. West softball team haven’t let off the gas pedal for a week and didn’t on Monday in a five-inning pummeling of Black Hills 18-0 in an Evergreen Conference contest in Tumwater.

Over the Bearcats (12-4, 8-1 EvCo) four-game winning streak, they have averaged over 16 runs per game. They broke this latest blowout victory open with a 14-run top of the fourth that turned a 3-0 cushion into a rout.

Of the 20 total hits by W.F. West, 13 of them came in the fourth and most of the damage came with two outs. Kenley Fragner and Aubree Nelson each drove in two runs in the frame. It also took advantage of four Wolves (5-9, 1-7) errors.

Lena Fragner, Addison Froschauer, Staysha Fluetsch, Kenley Fragner, Monroe Dalrymple and Nelson all drove in multiple runs while Lena Fragner led the Bearcats with four hits, two of them doubles. Dalrymple struck out nine in the circle to earn the victory.

Kailey Miller notched the only hit for Black Hills, who face Centralia at home on Wednesday. W.F. West hosts Rochester on Friday in its next league game.

Rochester cruises past Shelton in league victory

Behind the power of Layna Demers and Leah Hartley, the Warriors pounced all over the last place Highclimbers in a 12-1, five-inning triumph on Monday night in an Evergreen Conference tussle.

The win keeps Rochester (7-9, 4-4 EvCo) in fourth place in the standings and a game back of Aberdeen and a game up on Centralia. The Warriors next two league games are against Tumwater and W.F. West this week, starting with the Thunderbirds on Wednesday.

Four runs in the bottom of the first put Rochester in the driver’s seat as Demers delivered the blow with a two-run double. She deposited a leadoff solo home run to kickstart a four-run third and Hartley lifted a two-run homer in the fourth.

Demers also struck out nine in the circle, allowing one hit and one unearned run. Mckenna Vassar recorded two hits and two RBIs for the Warriors and Sara Haury registered two hits.
